Today, former facilities manager Trevor Smith takes us behind the doors of Britain’s most notorious high-security psychiatric hospital: Broadmoor. Over the course of his 34 years inside the institution, Trevor witnessed both its darkest moments and its most unexpected humanity, as he found himself working daily among some of Britain’s most dangerous and disturbed offenders, including individuals such as Peter Sutcliffe, Charles Bronson, Ian Kay, Peter Napper, and Ronnie Kray.

Trevor reflects on the difficulty of staying professional while surrounded by people convicted of truly horrific crimes. His job, however, involved more than managing and caring for the country’s most mentally unwell criminals. From the late 1960s onwards, Broadmoor also attracted the attention of celebrity Jimmy Savile, who was appointed “Honorary Entertainments Officer.”

Trevor describes how he strongly opposed Savile being granted access to the hospital. He also recalls the rich programme of therapeutic activities once offered at Broadmoor - painting, weaving, carpentry, and more - and how the gradual removal of these programmes, combined with an increasingly top-heavy management structure, contributed to what he sees as the hospital’s decline.
