The Story of Sachsenhausen

In today’s History documentary, we take a closer look at Sachsenhausen, one of Nazi Germany’s most notorious concentration camps and a key part of the regime’s system of terror, imprisonment and forced labour. Built near Berlin in 1936, Sachsenhausen was constructed as the Nazis prepared to showcase a new image of Germany to the world during the 1936 Berlin Olympics.

While athletes, journalists and visitors witnessed the spectacle of the Games, prisoners just 30 kilometres away were being forced to build the concentration camp themselves. Dr Astrid Ley walks us through the cruel reality of life inside Sachsenhausen, from the infamous “Arbeit Macht Frei” gate and Tower A to the brutal shoe testing track, cell block and Station Z.

Dr. Ley also examines Sachsenhausen’s role in Nazi Germany, the Holocaust and the wider concentration camp system, as well as its liberation in 1945 and why the site remains an important reminder of the crimes of the Third Reich.
