Frank Mitchell, known as The Mad Axeman, was one of Britain’s most feared criminals — a man of immense strength, violent reputation, and close ties to the Kray twins. Despite spending much of his life in prisons and psychiatric hospitals, Mitchell was notorious for escaping even the most secure institutions.

In December 1966, he was sprung from Dartmoor Prison with the help of the Krays. What began as a bold plan to win him a release date soon spiralled into disaster. Just 12 days later, Mitchell vanished without a trace. Some say he was executed on the Krays’ orders and dumped at sea. Others believe he was smuggled abroad, alive.
